Meet the Owner: My Riding Journey

Melissa's horses saddled up outside

In the first edition of the newsletter, I shared why I opened the store. This time, I wanted to share a little more about me — the person behind it all.

Riding has always been a big part of my life, but confidence has never come easily. Riding anxiety has a quiet way of showing up: the what-ifs that take over your thoughts and slowly take the joy out of something you love. Sometimes it comes from a bad experience or a fall. Sometimes it’s about trust — trusting yourself, or trusting your horse.

I started my riding journey later in life and have only been riding for a little over eight years. I began on a lesson horse, and about six months in, with the support of a great coach and friends, I bought my first horse, Ally. Together, we found success in the arena: shows, gymkhanas, obstacle challenges, and weekly lessons.

Trail riding, however, was a different story. Ally fed off my nerves, and I struggled to trust both her and myself outside the arena.

That’s when Elly came into my life: my steady, reliable trail horse. Elly became much more than just a trail partner. We took lessons, attended clinics, went to shows, and competed in obstacle challenges. She always tried her best for me, even when my confidence wavered.

As my goals grew, I made the difficult decision to sell Ally and purchased my Quarter Horse, Jazzy. She was everything I had hoped for. That first summer together was incredible; we did well in lessons and obstacle challenges. Then, unexpectedly, something shifted.

That’s when I realized I was dealing with more than just low confidence. Even without a specific incident, anxiety had taken hold, and horses are incredibly sensitive to that. I wasn’t ready to give up, so I took a step I never imagined I would and worked with a sports psychologist.

Last year, my confidence reached a low point when I froze during a competition, even while riding Elly, my most trusted horse. That moment reminded me how important support truly is.

Today, I’m still on this journey. Jazzy is my heart, and I believe we’ll find our way forward together. Elly is getting older, and the thought of her eventual retirement is always in the back of my mind. She’s been my safe place, my confidence builder, my trusted steed.

Sharing this isn’t about having answers; it’s simply about being honest. And if this story feels familiar, I hope it reminds you that you’re not alone.

Stridara Equine Therapy logo

Stridara Equine Therapy is dedicated to helping animals feel and perform at their very best through professional PEMF (Pulsed Electromagnetic Field) therapy. They offer services for equine athletes, pleasure horses, livestock, and small animals, with convenient mobile treatments that come directly to your barn or acreage.

PEMF works by delivering gentle electromagnetic pulses into the body, stimulating cells and supporting the body’s natural healing processes at a cellular level. This non-invasive therapy can help improve circulation, reduce inflammation, relieve soreness and stiffness, and promote faster recovery from exercise or injury. Many animals visibly relax during sessions, often showing immediate signs of comfort and ease.

PEMF has been used with great results to support a wide range of conditions including muscle tightness, joint stiffness or arthritis, back pain, soft tissue injuries, hoof concerns such as abscesses, and general performance and recovery needs. It is also beneficial for livestock and small animals experiencing mobility issues, injury recovery, or age-related stiffness. At Stridara, every session is tailored to the individual animal, ensuring they receive the care and attention they need to thrive.
