How to Measure Your Horse

A blanket size is one measurement in inches. It takes two minutes with a soft tape measure and a helper.

  1. Stand your horse square on level ground, head straight and relaxed.
  2. Start at the centre of the chest, where the chest meets the front of the neck.
  3. Go around the widest part of the shoulder, keeping the tape level along the side of the body.
  4. Finish at the point of the buttock, just before the tail. That number in inches is the blanket size.

Between sizes? Go up to the next size. Broad-chested or well-muscled horses often need a size up; slim, narrow horses can take the smaller size.

Checking the fit: two to three fingers fit at the withers and the front of the shoulder; the blanket ends at the start of the tail; belly straps sit a hand's width below the belly; leg straps cross between the hind legs with a hand's width of slack. Rubbing at the shoulder or tight across the chest means go up a size.

Blanket Size Chart

Blanket size Metric Typical fit
70"–72" 178–183 cm Arabians, small horses, yearlings
75"–78" 190–198 cm Quarter Horses, Morgans, Paints
81"–84" 206–213 cm Thoroughbreds, Warmbloods
86"–88" 218–224 cm Large Warmbloods, big-bodied horses
90"–94" 229–239 cm Draft crosses, drafts

Breeds are a starting point. Every horse is built differently, so always measure.
